چکیده

The genus Streptococcus includes organisms which are homofermentative, facultative with respect to oxygen, fastidious in their nutrient requirements, without cytochrome system, and are therefore considered to be catalase negative. Recent work in this laboratory revealed two strains of several hundred streptococci, screened from silage fermentations, that were capable of producing catalase. They appeared to be closely related to Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens. The work reported here describes the cultural, morphological, and physiological characteristics of the catalase-producing isolates.

Production of double zones of hemolysis by certain strains of hemolytic streptococci of groups A, B, C, and G on heart infusion agar.

This report describes the appearance of a double zone of hemolysis around surface colonies of certain strains of streptococci of groups A, B, C, and G incubated aerobically on sheep blood-Heart Infusion Agar. The occurrence of the altered hemolytic pattern was related to peroxide production by the organism. Anaerobic conditions and the incorporation of catalase into the agar abolished the doubl...

Characterization of thermophilic streptococci isolated from rustic white cheese.

The thermophilic streptococci are dominant members of the microflora of several types of cheese produced with a natural starter. A total of 205 isolates of thermophilic streptococci were obtained from 70 samples of white cheese which had been collected from producing areas of different regions of Syria during 2009 and 2010. The isolates were cocci gram positive and catalase negative. From these...

H(2)O(2) produced by viridans group streptococci may contribute to inhibition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization of oral cavities in newborns.

In an accompanying report, we showed that viridans group streptococci may prevent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization of the oral cavities of newborns. In the present study, we investigated the mechanism of prevention in vitro. Most viridans group streptococci had bacteriocin-like activity and killed MRSA, Burkholderia cepacia, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Pseudomonas...

Infective Endocarditis: Identification of Catalase-Negative, Gram-Positive Cocci from Blood Cultures by Partial 16S rRNA Gene Analysis and by Vitek 2 Examination

Streptococci, enterococci and Streptococcus-like bacteria are frequent etiologic agents of infective endocarditis and correct species identification can be a laboratory challenge. Viridans streptococci (VS) not seldomly cause contamination of blood cultures. Vitek 2 and partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene were applied in order to compare the results of both methods. STRAINS ORIGINATED FROM ...
